Apple Notes

I keep going back to Apple notes. I keep trying to use Obsidian but it just won’t stick. Apple notes is a pretty good app that unusually for Apple has received regular updates with each release of iOS. It syncs between my devices (all Apple) seamlessly and has all the basic organisation features I need such as folders, tags etc. as you would expect it’s pretty good with the Apple Pencil and has some, somewhat hidden features such as image scan using the camera. IOS 26 is supposed to be bringing markdown support if in a little half hearted way (as I understand it, it doesn’t render markdown, just lets you import and export markdown files). I’m looking forward to that as my blog posts are mostly written in notes using markdown. Hopefully I will be able to automate publishing a little more and retire my self rolled blog publishing cli tool for something in shortcuts.

I’m still intrigued by Obsidian, the power is alluring but if I’m honest with myself I’ll only ever use 1% of what it has to offer. Life is too short for going down another rabbit hole. That said the new bases feature is alluring and the idea of having my notes held in a database that I can interrogate is right up my street. Also as I read about DHH’s experiences going down the Linux desktop path and his work with Omakub and Omarchy I’m the closest I think I’ve ever been to trying something that isn’t MacOS, and for that there seems to be little other choice than Obsidian.
